Audubon Corner

It has been a busy month of activities at the Connaught Golf Club. On May 9th we hosted the Medicine Hat Hort Society for a walking tour of the golf course. Last year we made a presentation to the society about our Audubon program and they were very interested in visiting the club to see what we had talked about. It was a great evening for a walk, with close to 40 horts taking part. After the hour long walk about we hosted their monthly meeting in the clubhouse. During the meeting the Hort Society presented a cheque of $100 to the club for costs associated with the bird house building project with St. Pat’s school. (picture below) We thank the Hort Society for the generosity and look forward to having them again at Connaught.

As you may have noticed we have erected all of this years bird houses on the property. Most noticibly in and around #14 pond you will see the new bird boxes. We have seen a dramatic increase in tree swallows with these boxes around the wetlands. Tree swallows will consume 2000 insects and feed 6000 insects to their young over a 45 day nesting period. That means that each nestbox family consumes more than 300,000 insects. Since 90% of their hunting takes place below 39 feet, they are making a real dent in human pestering insect populations. So keep an eye out for the bright shiny violet blue backed bird on your next round. Further to the nest box project, St.Pat’s grade 4 students will be heading to the golf club on June 9 to tour the golf course and see their nest boxes. We look forward to having them once again.

If you haven’t noticed the pheasents around the club you havent been looking. We have at least five males all with their own corner of the property. Most noticibly is the big guy hanging out near the Vallely practice facility. He is not shy of people and can often be seen showing off on a tee box. We have also put up two more bat houses at the back of the driving and hope to attract more insect eating friends otherwise known as bats! We also have some new additions to the club, last weekend there were two families of geese with 3 goslings each, and a mallard duck hen with 8 ducklings in the pond on #5. Next time you are out playing a round make sure to keep your eyes open, as this is the time of year to see all the activity.
